ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Gaetano Sciolari (1927–1994) was an influential Italian lighting designer best known for his glamorous and futuristic chandeliers that bridged mid-century modernism and Hollywood regency style. Originally trained as an architect, Sciolari took over his family’s lighting company in the 1950s and became artistic director for Stilnovo, one of Italy’s leading modernist lighting firms. His designs blended clean geometric forms with luxurious materials like chrome, brass, and glass, creating pieces that were both minimal and highly decorative.

Throughout the 1960s–80s, Sciolari’s striking chandeliers gained international popularity, particularly in the U.S., where they were distributed by Lightolier. His work remains sought-after today for its sculptural presence, sophisticated use of light, and ability to add drama and elegance to modern interiors.
