ABOUT THE DESIGNER
George Kosturkov (1942–2022) was a distinguished Bulgarian-born sculptor and furniture designer who made significant contributions to the art world after immigrating to Western Australia in 1968. Renowned for his mastery in various materials, including bronze, aluminum, and wood, Kosturkov became celebrated for his unique sculptural works and furniture designs, particularly within the Brutalist style.
Kosturkov gained widespread recognition for his iconic Golden Gecko Sculpture, which has been awarded to recipients of the Golden Gecko Award since 1997, celebrating excellence in environmental practices within the resources sector. His commitment to craftsmanship ensured that each award was uniquely hand-carved and cast, making them highly sought after by awardees.
In addition to his sculptures, Kosturkov created notable furniture pieces, such as a striking Brutalist coffee table and a Jarrah smoking stand, reflecting his ability to blend functionality with artistic expression.
