AXEL DI PIETROBON ARMCHAIRS — ITALY, 1970S
(Two Available)
A rare and highly sculptural 1970s Italian armchair by Axel Di Pietrobon, distinguished by its enveloping form, deeply gathered brown leather upholstery and contrasting tobacco velvet seat cushion.
The chair exemplifies the expressive character of Italian furniture design of the period, with an almost architectural construction softened by generous padding and extensive gathered upholstery. The leather is drawn into fine vertical folds across the arms, back and outer shell, giving the chair its distinctive sculptural quality and an unusually tactile appearance.
A polished metal band wraps around the base of the upholstered body, creating a crisp horizontal detail between the substantial leather shell and lower base. The combination of rounded forms, polished metal and rich brown upholstery gives the chair a distinctly 1970s Italian character, somewhere between lounge furniture and sculpture.
The chair retains its original brown leather upholstery, which has developed a warm, rich patina over time. The generous seat cushion has been upholstered in deep tobacco velvet, with button detailing and gathered edges that complement the pleated leather beautifully.
Importantly, the chair retains its original manufacturer tags, providing valuable provenance and further confirming its attribution to Axel Di Pietrobon. Original tagged examples of Di Pietrobon furniture are particularly desirable given the relative scarcity of his work on the international vintage market.
A particularly impressive piece for collectors of Italian design, with the combination of documented designer attribution, original manufacturer tags, original leather and distinctive period construction making it considerably more interesting than a generic 1970s Italian lounge chair.
