A distinctive hand-painted terracotta vase by French-Swedish ceramic artist Louise Gardelle (b. 1944), renowned for her expressive figurative ceramics depicting women in relaxed, reclining poses.
This example features a woman in a blue polka-dot dress, rendered in Gardelle's characteristic simplified, graphic style, with strong dark outlines and a restrained palette of blue, grey, green and natural terracotta. The reverse is deliberately more restrained, allowing the hand-thrown form and rich glaze variation to remain visible.
Gardelle established her own ceramic workshop in France in 1974 and developed a highly individual body of work combining traditional French earthenware with influences from painting, Scandinavian design and Japanese-inspired pattern and line. Her female figures became a recurring motif throughout her career.
The piece is stamped to the underside and dates from the late 20th century, likely circa 1980s–2000s. As with Gardelle's work generally, the decoration is individually hand-painted, giving the surface subtle variations and an unmistakably artisanal quality.
