MARALUNGA ARMCHAIR — VICO MAGISTRETTI FOR CASSINA, 1973

A$3,000.00

An iconic example of Italian post-war design, this Maralunga armchair was designed by Vico Magistretti for Cassina in 1973, and is the smaller of the two original Maralunga armchair proportions, measuring approximately 98 cm wide.

The Maralunga is one of Magistretti's most recognisable designs, defined by its generous, almost enveloping upholstery and ingenious adjustable headrest. A simple mechanism concealed within the structure allows the backrest to move between a lower, more upright position and a raised position for deeper relaxation — an innovation that became central to the design and was patented by Cassina.

This example has been professionally reupholstered in a striking electric blue 1980s deadstock honeycomb velvet. The unusual vintage textile gives the otherwise familiar Maralunga a distinctly different character, accentuating the chair's exaggerated curves, deep cushions and sculptural silhouette. The subtle geometric texture of the honeycomb weave adds another layer of interest to the saturated blue upholstery.

The smaller proportions make this version particularly appealing where space is limited, while retaining the exceptionally generous, lounge-like comfort for which the Maralunga is known.

The Maralunga has become one of the defining pieces of Italian furniture design of the 1970s and is held in the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art, New York. The design is also associated with Magistretti's 1979 Compasso d'Oro-winning Maralunga project.

A particularly strong example for a contemporary interior, pairing an internationally recognised design with an unexpected and genuinely period textile.
