VINTAGE 1960s ART GLASS PITCHER VASE ATTB. TO EMPOLI ITALY

A$250.00

An exceptional example of mid-century Italian art glass, this dramatic hand-blown basket vase is attributed to Empoli and retains its original “Made in Italy” export label. Executed in richly coloured deep amethyst-purple glass, the piece embodies the sculptural elegance and expressive organic forms that defined Italian decorative glass production during the 1950s–1970s.

The vessel features an elongated asymmetrical body with a flowing pulled rim and substantial arched handle, showcasing the fluidity and technical confidence associated with Murano-influenced Italian glassmaking of the period. The highly polished surface and intense jewel-like colour create exceptional depth and luminosity, with the dark amethyst tone shifting beautifully depending on light and angle.

Particularly notable is the original woven raffia and wicker casing surrounding the lower body — a decorative treatment strongly associated with Empoli export glass produced for the European and North American market during the mid-century era. These natural woven coverings were both protective and stylistically fashionable, complementing the organic modern interiors popular at the time.

The retained foil “Made in Italy” label further supports its authenticity as an original Italian export piece rather than later reproduction work. Sculptural baskets and handled forms of this nature became highly popular during the post-war design boom, admired for their combination of functionality, theatrical form, and bold decorative presence.

Presented in very good vintage condition with light age-appropriate wear consistent with careful use. A striking and highly decorative example of collectible mid-century Italian art glass.
