VINTAGE PORTO CRUZ ADVERTISING ASHTRAY — MOULIN DES LOUPS, FRANCE

A$150.00

A striking piece of mid-century French advertising, this vintage Porto Cruz ashtray was manufactured by Moulin des Loups of Orchies, France, for the Portuguese port brand.

The substantial ceramic form features a deep, recessed bowl surrounded by a broad black glazed rim, with raised white PORTO CRUZ lettering wrapping around the exterior. A fine gilt line runs around the perimeter, giving the otherwise graphic black-and-white piece a distinctly elegant barware character.

The underside is marked with the Moulin des Loups, Orchies, France factory emblem and production reference 878.28.09.

Porto Cruz was launched by the French spirits company La Martiniquaise in 1956 and quickly became known for its extensive advertising campaigns. The combination of the post-war Porto Cruz branding and Moulin des Loups manufacture places this example comfortably within the mid-century advertising era, approximately the 1960s–70s.

A particularly good example of the period's advertising objects: functional, graphic and designed to be highly visible on the tables of cafés, bars and restaurants.
