VINTAGE ROSSI APÉRITIF ADVERTISING ASHTRAY — SARREGUEMINES, FRANCE
A striking piece of early French advertising ephemera, this vintage Rossi Apéritif ashtray was produced in France by Sarreguemines-Digoin-Vitry-le-François and decorated for the Italian aperitif brand Rossi.
Dating to approximately 1930, the substantial white faïence form has a distinctive architectural, almost Art Deco profile, with a recessed circular bowl and four integrated cigarette rests.
The exterior carries the bold ROSSI APÉRITIF graphic in black and white over a vivid blue disc — a particularly strong example of the graphic language used in European drinks advertising during the interwar period.
The underside is marked Sarreguemines D.V. France along with Publicité VOX Paris, identifying both the French faïence manufacturer and the advertising agency responsible for the decoration.
Rossi was an Italian aperitif produced by the Rossi brothers in Turin and subsequently associated with Martini & Rossi. The brand's early French advertising is particularly notable for its collaboration with French graphic artist Jean Droit, whose distinctive Rossi imagery became one of the company's best-known advertising designs of the period.
A great example of early 20th-century commercial design, combining French faïence production with Italian drinks branding and the emerging graphic language of modern advertising.
