VINTAGE ST-RAPHAËL APÉRITIF ADVERTISING ASHTRAY
A wonderfully graphic piece of French mid-century advertising, this vintage St-Raphaël Apéritif ashtray was produced in France by Magnier Blangy, the renowned glass manufacturer based in Blangy-sur-Bresle.
Made from dense white opaline glass, the substantial circular form has a softly scalloped rim with four cigarette rests. Around the exterior is the unmistakable St-Raphaël branding in vivid red, accompanied by the brand's distinctive gold and black emblem and the words “Apéritif de France – Rouge Blanc.”
The ashtray dates to approximately the 1950s–60s, a period when advertising objects such as these were ubiquitous in French cafés, bars and bistros. The French Ministry of Culture specifically records a St-Raphaël “Apéritif de France rouge blanc” advertising ashtray made by Magnier Blangy in approximately 1950–1960.
The underside is moulded “Magnier Blangy – Made in France”, identifying the manufacturer. Magnier Blangy was a French glassworks known for producing moulded glass advertising objects, including ashtrays for major drinks brands.
A great example of French commercial design from the era — graphic, utilitarian and instantly recognisable. It works just as well today as a desk object, catchall or decorative piece as it did on the tables of French cafés.
