THE ANTELOPE CHAIR BY HANS OLSEN FOR VISKADALENS, 1960
The ‘Antelope’ chair was designed by Hans Olsen (Denmark) and produced by Viskadalens Möbelindustri (Sweden) in the early 1960s. A revolutionary scandinavian design of the time, the piece references ‘Safari’ chairs through its fitted sling that is strapped to the frame and brass hardware that essentially bolts together the joinery of the chair.
Based in Kinna, Sweden, Viskadalens Möbelindustri was a producer of high-end scandinavian furniture during the 1940s-1960s and collaborated with several top Danish designers including Olsen. Although Olsen was a student of Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy Furniture School from 1941 to 1943, he belonged to a somewhat rebellious group of Danish furniture designers who chose to experiment with both form and materials.
One such design was the 'Antelope' chair for Viskadalens Möbelindustri.
This particular example can be described as in excellent vintage condition. The piece has developed only very light patina from age, the suede is predominantly unmarked and the teak frame is in beautiful original condition with no damage.
A truly remarkable and very comfortable piece of scandinavian design history. Available to view at our new Surry Hills store with domestic and international shipping available. Please contact us should you have any questions about this or any of our available pieces.
