Henrietta Manning is a contemporary Australian realist painter known for her evocative explorations of time, memory, and place. Born in England in 1961, she studied at Goldsmiths College and Exeter University before relocating to Australia, where she completed postgraduate studies at the City Art Institute in Sydney. Since her first solo exhibition in 1985, Manning has maintained a strong national presence, exhibiting in Sydney, Melbourne, and regional galleries.
Her practice blends plein-air landscapes, figurative studies, and personal or historical themes, often created within time-based constraints. Notable projects include the portrait series In Face of Isolation, developed during residencies in Hill End, and she has been a finalist in prestigious prizes such as the Wynne, Portia Geach, and Glover. Manning received an Australia Council New Work Established Grant in 2005 and has exhibited internationally, including in the UK’s Summer Exhibition.
Now based in the Huon Valley, Tasmania, Manning works from Studio Waterloo, a restored apple-packing shed overlooking the Huon River. She is a founding member of the Tasmanian Artists & Makers of the Huon and helped establish ARTBOX, a mobile exhibition space supporting regional artists. Her work invites quiet reflection, capturing fleeting moments and the emotional resonance of people and landscapes with striking realism.
